Stop Guessing, Start Creating

Achieve your musical goals, without the frustration.
As you might have experienced, improvisation can be a daunting endeavour. Most of the jazz education focusses solely on bebop, but you might fall in between the cracks. You might dig bebop, but it might not necessarily be what you (only) want to play.
The search for answers only brings more questions and eventually you’re just meandering and noodling over chord changes.

Authentic Improviser Roadmap*

An all encompassing approach to jazz, improvisation and soloing in general with your aspirations at the center.

*AIR for short

With AIR you'll:

  • Remove overwhelm
  • Get laser focus
  • Work on the things that will make you achieve your goals faster
  • Become the musician you want to be
  • Get a personalised approach to soloing and improvisation

Why you need a (better) plan

A long time ago, we started studying jazz. The problem was that although we liked jazz, we didn’t want to create that straight-ahead jazz (aka bebop) that has become the default for teaching improvisation. We’re misfits.

To make things matters worse, there didn’t seem to be any methodology. You just had to be lucky with the teacher you got.

So we continued studying, working, transcribing and analyzing and after many years of doing that (and even going back to the conservatory), we came up with our system. A system based on what all the legendary players displayed in the transcriptions we made of them. A system for you to recreate and follow your own path to being able to play what your hear inside of you.

If you’ve ever wondered: How do I get “that” sound? How do they do it? What do I need to practice??

Then we’ve got you covered.

Goals of this program

  •  Give you the ability to hear things in your head with clarity, so you:
    •  know what you’re hearing
    • have the tools and knowledge to be able to execute it on your instrument
  • Give you a complete overview of musical concepts so you can pick and choose the ones that match your taste/style/preference
  • Be able to transcribe anything you want
  • Be able to analyse what you transcribed and identify what’s happening
  • Be a self-reliant musician
  • Have a clear vision of your own style

→ You’ll have an authentic and personalized sound approach on your instrument. You do you, we will help you with unlocking your unique potential.
→ You’ll get a highly effective method to practice and develop which you can retake with adjustments anytime.
→ Your musical awareness will rise quickly, building your confidence as an improviser and musician in general.
→ This will be the place where you will understand how every piece of the puzzle - technique, sound, theory, ear training, … - fits together. When that clicks, the growth is exponential and will take you on a positive spiral.

Testimonials

"Studying weekly with you these past 5 years has changed my musical life. Your new AIR process is pretty much what you’ve done with me. I can tell you all it is a proven method and I’m the proof 😎

Plus, it’s so fun and you both can really play! Thanks for this site and your study and thoughtful work."

Cy Schmidt (USA)

"I find this program to be very interesting. I think there is a lot of flexibilty for the learner/student built in so that they can address which topics they like in whatever order they want to.

Also there is a wide range of material to dive into. The structure is easy to follow and laid out well into neat sections."

Matthew Dowie (N.I.)

"I think the platform is amazing and it inspires me also for running my own classes."

Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

How is this different from the other "learn jazz & improvisation" platforms?

While there might be some overlapping fundamentals with other similar programs, we focus on the individuality of your artistic needs. Everybody has different blends of inspirations, so an one-for-all education is not compatible with that.

That's why on the one side  we provide tons of practical resources and straight-forward lessons, on the other side we've spent an equal amount of time working out a special method to unlock all your specific individual goals. This includes working on your musical vision through assesments, questionaires and personal guidance by us, informed transcription selection and extracting the right information out of that to creatively implement yourself and so much more.

We go by the motto: Don't follow someone else's heroics. Take a small step you can call your own.

And we will help you with exactly that: uncovering your own voice on your instrument through your personal and unique journey.

Do I need a minimum level on my instrument to start?

To benefit the most from the progam, you'll need to have some very basic understanding of your instrument and where to find the notes on that instrument. For example, in the saxophone "Fundamentals" course, there is no lesson on every basic fingering for every basic range note. However, from there on, all the basics are covered in a way that it is accessible and benificial to all levels, whether you are a seasoned pro or a starting amateur.

Is this for all instruments?

A large part of this program is universal for all instruments and when it’s time to get instrument-specific, things split up of course. For now that's only for saxophone and guitar specific. But this just 1 part out of the 5 steps involved.

Just like conservatories there are some courses and classes that are fundamental to all instruments: ear training, harmony and rhythm. As well as the parts where you get guided to cherry pick from your own inspirations and specify your vision.

I don't care about an "authentic sound", I just want to play like Michael Brecker. Is there still something to learn for me here?

Of course! If you are really captured by mainly one legendary Master of the instrument, you can surely focus on copying that note for note and try to sound as similar.

All the lessons and steps including ear training, mastering your instrument, ... will still help you on that path, and the "Transcription Paths", organized in level of difficulty, will be a great addition to your practice.

The only thing that is more focused to a singular approach is where we "cherry pick from the masters". In this case you'd cherry pick within one major influence of yours, where you can still focus on particular aspects of their playing one at the time.

How long does this 5 step program take? And am I finished once I've gotten through it?

There is no exact time schedule necessarily for going through this 5 step program. It's partly flexible, as after step 1. (the mapping of your playing and goals) you can hop easily between steps 2,3 and 4.

Once you feel very comfortable in these steps towards your goal, you go to the final step for a overall measuring of your progress towards the desired destination.

Everybody has different goals and learning curves, so there is no exact timing. But for one cycle to complete, you would at least need 3-6 months to do it properly and thorough.

From there you can repeat the process, as in meantime you will have gotten new and/or deeper inspirations you've picked up on. We provide the customized plan and mapping once per year and we can specify, adapt, go to the next level, change direction (a bit or a lot), ... The vast majority of us feel there is so much to learn, yet, too little time. It's the method and process that matters.

We have many plans and lessons that are still yet to come. Among those are genre specific lessons, the science behind "how to study efficiently", new improvisation idea's and approaches, and so much more. You don't need to, but you might want to stick around for all of that.
